Jajah: Making Strides in VoIP

Jajah, one of the most intriguing and innovative upstarts in the VoIP scene introduced a telephony protocol that eliminates the process of needing to download and install software on your computer to enable you to make calls. Unlike Skype and Gizmo Project, there is no need to reserve precious hard drive space just so you can make use of relatively more affordable VoIP.

Jajah was launched with its main function being accessed primarily through its website, on a browser. Since then, it had launched services that allows users to access VoIP through a local landline phone, through gaming consoles, and even through the iPhone.

Jajah Direct is Jajah’s offline service, which lets you take advantage of VoIP services through your good ol’ landline. It works much like a gateway, wherein:

  1. You dial a local access number through your landline
  2. You then enter the international number you want to call
  3. JAJAH connects you.

From browser-based telephony to direct telephony to a gateway, indeed, Jajah is making strides.

This upstart on the VoIP scene may have sparked Gizmo Project to launch its own web-based services, which will be discussed in a later post.

Jajah seems to be targeting the young set, what with their innovations that are geared towards gadgets and gaming.

From the iPhone to the PS3, Jajah makes its presence felt. Gamers can now do voice chat with each other using Jajah through the PS3 browser. They only need to go to the play.jajah.com URL to place a call. To use the service, “Users enter the number they wish to call, and the service then calls the phone nearest the user (that number must be pre-configured) and connects the two numbers via a VoIP line.” (source)

VoIP is becoming so essential that even gaming consoles can use the service. Even Xbox has its own VoIP service through Xbox Live. Xbox Live is a multiplayer game and content delivery system for the Xbox. Through this, gamers can talk among themselves as they play. The service even has a “friends list” for the gamer to keep in touch with his teammates and opponents.

The only downside to Jajah is that in some countries, they would only allow calls between landlines, and the functionality bars calling cellular phones. Yet either way, Jajah is an innovative addition to the VoIP industry.

International telephony barriers are breaking down with every stride that VoIP makes. Thanks to innovative upstarts like Jajah, there is no telling what the limits are in VoIP.
